6 Tips For Building a Family Home

Building a family home is an exciting opportunity and an important investment. However, because there’s so much involved, it can be an incredibly stressful process. It’s important that you know the right tips to keep things under control. From choosing the neighborhood to putting down foundation, here are some of the best tips for building a family home.

Find Inspiration

Before you start throwing ideas out there, it’s important that you find inspiration. Places like Pinterest make a great place to find images to give you ideas. Throughout the process of building a home, you’ll be presented with a considerable amount of different choices.

Having inspiration to draw from helps you go back to your original idea. Sometimes its handy to refer back to your original inspiration, so you don’t get lost in all of the decision making. It also helps your builder materialize your idea better when you have a visual reference to show them.

Be Flexible

Unless you have an unlimited source of income, chances are that you’ll have to make a few sacrifices throughout the design process. It’s best to create a list of things that you absolutely can’t live without. Everything else can be negotiable even though it might be frustrating having to let certain things go. It’s unfortunately, a reality when you have to stick to a budget. Remaining flexible will help you get the project done faster.

Don’t Rush

It’s normal to be excited about getting your home done as quickly as possible. However, rushing doesn’t do anyone any favors. In fact, rushing is likely to leave you with low quality work. Instead, take your time to make sure everything gets done properly. That way, you know that everything is well constructed and not at risk of falling apart because it was put together at the last minute.

Open Floor Plan

When you’re building a home for kids, it’s important that you can see everything that’s going on. Consider an open floor plan so that you don’t have to worry about your kids being on the other side of a wall. Although you will have some parts of the home that are less visible than others, consider opting for an open floor plan for the majority of the family spaces.

Consider Safety

Kids are more accident-prone than adults. It’s important that you consider safety when constructing your home. Areas like stairwells and counters should be carefully constructed to avoid children getting hurt. The last thing you want is something terrible happened that could have easily been avoided with little foresight.

Choose Durable Materials

Even though you might want to save as much money as possible, it’s beneficial to use quality materials instead of cheap ones. Durable materials will make sure that your home stands the test of time and won’t be destroyed by your children over the years.

4 Sexy Games For You And Your Boo To Try This Year

Let’s face it, our sex lives always need a little boost. They get a little stale, they get de-prioritized, we find things we love more than sex (like naps or HBO Max), and one day it dawns on us: We don’t need more research, we just need more ideas. This may not surprise you at all, but novelty and excitement are some of the key elements of passion and arousal. The good news is that you don’t need to push the limits and have Eyes Wide Shut parties every weekend to get that little oomph you’ve been craving.

Here are 4 easy, simple, and sexy games for you and your partner to try this year (because 2021’s already been stressful enough):

  • Guess This Item

Blindfold your partner and grab a few random objects from around the house (it can be a feather, a belt, an ice cube, or a piece of rope, anything you can find – it doesn’t have to be inherently sexy!). While they’re laying down, trace an item lightly over their skin. The longer it takes them to guess, the further south you trace… it’s a game where there are no losers.

  • Truth or Dare – Minus The Truth

If you’ve ever gone to middle school, you know the drill. Go back and forth daring each other to do increasingly high-stakes things – hopefully, they’re a little on the sexy side – and agree on a ruthless punishment if either of you passes. It can be anything like “I dare you to fake an orgasm” or “I dare you to tell me your wildest fantasy.”

  • “Aural’” Sex

Find an erotic story and read it to your partner. It sounds simple, but this stimulates your senses: your auditory senses. Research has shown that reading or listening to erotic fiction is actually more arousing than watching porn. There is something about using our imagination to conjure up a scenario that makes it even more powerful.

  • Sexy Spin The Bottle

This isn’t your average spin the bottle game. Cut one piece of paper into 4 squares, then ask your partner to do the same. Write down 4 sexy things you’d like the other person to do for you, or to you. Spread out the 8 slips of paper in a circle, and take turns spinning. You might not make it through all 8, in fact, you might get a bit distracted after the first few, but that’s just the beauty of it.

How To Identify Food Allergies In Babies

Babies aren’t great communicators. During the very early stages of their development, they’re either silent, or they’re screaming or crying. As every parent knows, screaming and crying can mean almost anything. They might be tired or bored. They might be trying to tell you that they need a change, or they’re hungry. A lot of the time, there doesn’t appear to be any reason at all. Trying to understand the reason your baby is crying is all part of the fun and games of being a new parent. It’s a wonder that any of us ever sign up for the job!

Because a baby can’t speak, gesticulate, or otherwise communicate specific facts, it isn’t always easy to spot the signs of a food allergy. That’s a common worry for new parents because severe food allergies can be dangerous, and you won’t know they exist until after your baby has eaten. None of us would ever poison our children deliberately, but even the thought that you might have done so accidentally is extremely upsetting. That’s why you need to know the tell-tale signs of an allergy.

An allergic reaction and rejection or regurgitation of food aren’t the same things. Just as we can’t always be sure why a baby is crying, we can’t always be sure why they’re throwing food back up either. A baby is like an online slots UK game. You can place the same bet on an online slots game ten or twenty times and have nothing happen, only for the jackpot to turn up on the eleventh or twenty-first spin. You can feed a baby the same food ten or twenty times and have nothing happen, and then get a violent rejection of the same meal on that eleventh or twenty-first feed. People tend to be happier with online slots jackpots than unexpected projectile vomit, so this isn’t a perfect comparison, but the comparison stands anyway!

Believe it or not, vomiting isn’t one of the potential signs of a food allergy. Read on, and we’ll tell you what you should be looking for instead.

Foods Babies Might Be Allergic To

It’s possible to avoid the risk of an allergic reaction almost completely if you avoid feeding your baby anything that presents a risk of one, but that would mean keeping them on an extremely restricted diet, which wouldn’t be ideal. There are some foods that present higher risks than others, though, and you should be conscious of when you introduce them to your baby for the first time so you can monitor them closely for any adverse reactions.

As a starting point, babies can be allergic to almost any kind of nut. Giving nuts to babies isn’t advisable anyway because they can get lodged in their throats, but even crushed or pasted nuts like peanut butter can be a problem. They can also be allergic to cow’s milk, which comes as a surprise to some people. This isn’t the same thing as being lactose intolerant (we’ll come to that later) – it’s a full-blown allergy. The other major candidates for potential allergies are eggs, shellfish, wheat, and soy. Keep a feeding diary when you’re giving your infant a food type for the first time, and only use small quantities of these foods in the early stages to minimize the severity of any potential allergic reaction.

Foods Babies Might Not Tolerate

It’s easy to confuse food intolerance with a food allergy, but they’re not the same thing. The effects of eating a food you’re intolerant to tend to be milder than those of consuming food you’re allergic to. They’re still unpleasant, but they’re not as dangerous! Intolerances are far more common than allergies but can be harder to spot.

There are three main types of food intolerance that your baby might experience. Those are lactose intolerance, gluten intolerance, and intolerance of additives in food. The latter group is the easiest to deal with because you can avoid additives altogether if you shop smart. Lactose intolerance and gluten intolerance are harder to work with because you’ll probably need to obtain specialist baby food to navigate around the problem.

A baby who is lactose intolerant will probably be bloated and gassy after drinking milk. They might also experience diarrhea. Bloating and upset stomachs are also common with gluten intolerance, but this can also manifest as headaches. Intolerance of food additives is different and might appear as rashes as well as stomach upsets. Because of the rash, it can be hard to distinguish from an allergy at first, which is why it’s important to seek medical advice if rashes appear after meals.

Symptoms Of Allergies

Here’s where things get difficult! Allergies can manifest themselves in a myriad of different ways, and some of the reactions are similar to illnesses like coughs or colds. That’s why we have to be vigilant about watching our children after meals and observing whether the symptoms are present at any time other than shortly after eating. In almost all cases, the symptoms of an allergy will present themselves within an hour of a meal being consumed. In some cases, it will only take a few minutes.

Aside from stomach upsets, an allergic reaction can appear as hives or rashes, a runny nose, coughing, itchiness, sneezing, wheezing, or swelling of the skin that’s been in contact with food, including mouths and lips. In the most serious of cases, an allergic reaction will lead to anaphylaxis, which is extremely dangerous. It’s also extremely obvious. Anaphylaxis appears as disorientation or confusion, chest pain, asthma-like shortness of breath, difficulty swallowing, and even loss of consciousness. Should any of these symptoms occur, an ambulance must be called immediately.

We know that telling parents not to worry is pointless, but please do try to avoid losing sleep over the prospect of your baby having an allergy. In the overwhelming majority of cases, allergies manifest as nothing more than a slight irritation. By introducing new foods slowly and carefully and logging responses, you should be able to identify them yourself and plan meals accordingly. If in doubt, though, a doctor or pediatrician should have no problem confirming your suspicions. In most cases, simple antihistamines are enough to deal with any allergic reaction that might appear – so ensure you always have some in your house and seek medical advice if you have any doubts!

Pest Control Myths You Need To Be Careful About

Nobody would like to have pests in their home unless they’re insane. That’s why almost everyone is seeking ways to eliminate them as soon as they realize an infestation. Pests can cause damages to your home and infect you with serious diseases.

download.jpg

Unfortunately, it may not be easy to notice their effects for months. That’s why it’s recommended that you hire a professional pest service control like Pointe Pest Control to help you manage these critters. But before you hire these professionals, here are some myths you need to know about pest control.

1. The Best Way To Attract Mice Is Through Cheese

For many years, film-makers have created cartoons that show mice being attracted to cheese. Though they may love this type of food, research indicates that they’re more attracted to sugary foods.

That’s why you need to be careful about where you store your sugar cubes, grapes, and peanut butter. Alternatively, you can use these as bait on mouse traps. Nesting materials like feathers and straw have also been found to be effective mouse traps.

2. Bugs don’t infect clean Homes

Pests can infest even the cleanest of homes, though it may be challenging to discover a pest invasion in a dirty and messy house. Unlike other pests, bugs don’t visit homes based on cleanliness. Instead, they’ll continuously look for shelter, food, and water, as long as there’s an opportunity to break into your house.

A professional pest control company can help you eliminate them and advise you on how to seal possible entry points. Weatherstripping and little caulk can also help you to eliminate bugs. It’s also recommended that you check and seal any holes that may be on your doors and windows.

3. Stinging Insects Will Only Attack You If You Provoke Them

When most kids grow up, they’re taught that bees, wasps, and other stinging insects will only attack if they’re bothered. However, this isn’t true because these insects may descend upon you if they feel that you’ve threatened their colony. This could be as simple as walking under or near their nests.

Therefore, if you find any bee, yellow jacket, or wasps nest next to your home, remove it. It would be safe if you called professionals to take care of it to avoid injuries. Research indicates that stinging insect allergies affect more than 2 million Americans. Therefore, a nest may be a potential danger to your friends, family members, or neighbors.

4. Mosquitoes Only Surface During The Dusk and Dawn

Though this is what most people believe, it can only happen in magical lands with fictitious mosquitoes. The truth is that mosquitoes are active at all hours and may invade at any time if they have available food. Therefore, it’s vital to keep your yard and house clean to prevent your family and friends from being infected by dangerous viruses brought by this pest, such as West Nile, Zika, malaria, and dengue. You may also consider using a mosquito misting and fogging system to also control them.

5. Cats Keep Homes Free From Rats And Mice

Some people keep cats because they think they’ll help them keep rats and mice at bay. Unfortunately, most cats would do the exact opposite. The common Hollywood that depicts cats chasing rodents isn’t true because cats will only go after rats if they feel they want a plaything.

It would also be difficult for your cat to reach mice in burrows or holes within the compound. It would be better to use other pest control methods to eliminate these critters than depend on your cats.

Summing Up

There are a lot of myths that most people believe are facts. Before using any of these methods to control pests, ensure you prove their effectiveness. Using well-researched pest control tips will help you manage pest infestation in your home.

Small Space For a Garden? A Tiny Pond Will Do a Job!

You might’ve had big dreams for your garden, a lush haven of plants and features. Reality doesn’t always match fantasies, and now, you’re stuck with a space too small to fulfill your dreams.

A small water feature is your best bet. It’ll make your yard seem more spacious, more luxurious, and full of life. However, digging up a tiny pond inside your garden differs from planting a bush of marigolds or pansies.

Let’s go over the considerations to keep in mind if you take up this task.

Determine the Purpose

Your pond is primarily there for decorative purposes, but the multiple design options can change the aesthetics of your entire yard. Think about the following questions:

  • Do you want it to look natural or to stand out as the central piece? Would you prefer a fountain?
  • Will you use the area for planting?
  • Would you like to have fish in your pond?

The answers restrict the pump and filtration systems you can use to make it work. If you’re unsure about what you want, look into different types of backyard ponds for inspiration before making any decisions.

Choose the Right Spot

The ideal location for a pond has enough natural light. The sun consistently cleans and maintains your water surface, keeping it fresh and free of bacteria.

However, there should be some shade around, especially in hot climates, to prevent sunshine from drying out the water in the summer.

You should also find a level plot of land, avoiding tilted areas if possible. While a bit of an angle won’t make much of a difference, it’s more challenging to DIY the digging if you have to change depths halfway through the process.

Determine the Size

A small garden doesn’t leave enough room for a broad pond, but you can play around with depth depending on which plants and fish you plan on cultivating.

For example, many water plants flourish in shallow areas, while fish require a bit of depth to survive winter. Consider the pipes that run below your yard, too.

Once you choose the size and location, it’s time to break ground. Prepare some clay for lining once you dig it up and you’re already halfway there.

Get the Right Accessories

Filling the hole with water and stopping there leads to missing out on everything a mini-lake has to offer. You’ll find many affordable, easy-to-install extras that make the design much more practical and impressive.

You can go to Aquatic Ponds for a glance at the scope of tools and extras at your disposal. Notable cherries on top include:

  • Pumps to keep the water moving
  • Filtration systems for maintenance and cleanliness
  • Waterfalls for fancy details
  • Nightlights to astonish visitors

A garden pond is much more than a still pool of water. Most of its charm lies in what’s inside and around it, though, so don’t skip this step.

Add Fish and Plants

Finally, if you still have your gardening ambitions, you can plant flowers and bushes around the pond. Alternatively, many fish species thrive in small artificial spaces, breathing life into your backyard.

Do some research about which species from the natural world can survive and flourish in your climate beforehand, though.

Take Away

Instead of remaining frustrated with a garden not big enough to match your aspirations, enjoy your new project.

Adding a water feature to the back yard opens the door to endless possibilities. Embrace the hobby and uncover all the options this tiny pond adds to your gardening repertoire.

6 Tips to Take Care of Your Pet in Winter

The dropping temperatures and a sparkling white coating over the streets are a source of great joy. However, without a routine adjustment, the colder weather can be harmful to your pets.

Let’s check out the six essential tips for keeping your furry friend happy and toasty in wintertime.

Tip #1: Ensure Shelter

Ideally, your animal companion should stay inside at least from December to March. Take them out for walks and playtime, but don’t leave them outside when the temperatures drop.

Your pet might prefer to spend time outdoors, though, especially if you have a big garden. Introducing sufficient shelter space is your go-to solution.

For example, the best outdoor cat house will be big enough for comfortable movement but small enough to maintain body heat. The same goes for pups.

Tip #2: Consider the Food-Activity Ratio

Like people, animals aren’t as active when it’s cold outside. So, you might need to adjust their food intake to ensure adequate nutrition.

The changes can go both ways. You might have a puppy who loves snow and going out several times a day. In this case, up their intake to make up for the energy loss.

On the other hand, some pets avoid going out during the winter months. So, they should consume fewer calories. If you’re worried your animal isn’t getting enough activity, you could:

  • Spread meals around the house
  • Throw snacks for them to catch down the hall
  • Introduce mobile food-dispensing toys

Mixing it up a bit can help with their motivation to eat and move.

Tip #3: Check Their Paws

Tails, ears, and legs are the areas of dogs’ and cats’ bodies most susceptible to frostbite. You can’t do much for ears and tails except for keeping the walks short and during daylight hours. However, putting on boots provides some welcome warmth.

Plus, both these animals lick their paws. If they stepped into a harmful chemical such as a deicer, they could get sick after touching it. If footwear isn’t an option, at least wipe the paws with a warm towel when you come back home.

Tip #4: Don’t Bathe Them as Often

Bathing dries out the skin in people and pets alike. While you can mitigate the effects with moisturizer, your companion doesn’t get to enjoy the same luxury.

Don’t cut out baths altogether, but reduce their frequency to help them avoid dry skin discomfort. You could explore alternative cleaning methods or find a shampoo with extra moisturizing features to balance cleanliness and comfort.

Tip #5: Keep Them Leashed

Even if your regular outings don’t include a leash, in wintertime, they should. For one, your dog could run out in the snow, and it’ll be much harder to locate it. Plus, snowfall can disguise recognizable scents that a pet would typically use to find its way home.

Additionally, make sure that your microchips and collar are up-to-date if they do run away so they could more quickly and easily return to safety.

Tip #6: Remove Hazards

Finally, the snowfall is home to many potential hazards for animals. Clean up spills and shovel snow from your backyard. When you take your dog or cat outside, keep an eye out for antifreeze, rough terrain, and hidden debris on the ground.

It might make walks mentally straining, but it’s worth avoiding the health risks that come with these outdoor threats.

Safety First

As long as you keep these tips in mind and apply them for every walk, bath, and feeding session, your pet will be happy and healthy once the snow melts.

4 Things You Should Do Before 40

Even though there’s no exact age when everybody feels like they suddenly become a grown-up, 40 seems to be an age that most people consider you should start to have your life together. At age 40, you should have already established a job, attained life skills like how to balance your checkbook, and hopefully know how to look after your hygiene.

However, in addition to these basic accomplishments that you should have ticked off by 40, you should also make sure that you have mastered these things too.

Write a Will

Even though you may not want to believe that anything can happen to you, the truth is that things can come up. If you don’t leave an estate plan, then you’ll be leaving everything you own in the hands of the courts. A common misconception is that your assets will go to your next of kin. Unfortunately, this isn’t always automatically guaranteed. An estate plan is essential for ensuring that what you own goes to the people you want it to.

Establish a Sleep Schedule

When you’re younger, it’s normal to have a busy social life and find yourself less susceptible to fatigue after a long night out. However, the older that you get, the more critical that sleep becomes. It’s important that you establish a regular sleep schedule to get your body functioning as it should be. Exhaustion doesn’t just wear on your mental health but also on your immune system. Ideally, you should go to bed as early as possible and wake up as early as possible.

Learn How To Small Talk

It’s not unusual to find yourself in your younger years struggling to find a way to fill dead air when meeting people you don’t know. However, making small talk is one of the best life skills you can develop. You never know who you can meet along the way, and knowing how to put yourself outside of your comfort zone is a fantastic skill to have. If you’re not sure how to get started, try asking questions.

Stay Active

Finding a way to stay active will keep your body lean and healthy. Research shows that people who exercise regularly are less likely to develop age-related diseases and even depression. Being active doesn’t necessarily need to mean going to the gym and lifting barbells, either. Staying active can be as simple as walking briskly for 30 minutes a day. The idea is to get your blood pumping and your muscles moving. Since your muscle mass starts to diminish as you get older, you should keep your body as strong as possible. Not to mention, exercise is also a great way to make new friends.

Autism Self-Diagnosis in Adults

Awareness of autism and related disorders along the spectrum has grown a lot over the past few years. With this awareness, there has also been a growing trend of self-diagnosis among adults. The symptoms of adult diagnosis are, naturally, different from those exhibited by children. So, what does autism look like in adults?

Autism in Children Versus Adults

When clinicians present an autism spectrum disorder diagnosis in children, they use several cues to identify the disorder:

·        Persistent difficulties in social interaction

·        Deficits in verbal and non-verbal communication

·        Sensitivity to visual, auditory, and physical stimuli

·        Intense focus on specific ideas or projects

·        Discomfort in social settings

·        Difficulty understanding social cues

In addition to these basic markers, there are  many other signs of autism. Do these markers look the same for adults who haven’t previously received a diagnosis?

Autism Versus Emotional Imbalance

If adults have experienced these symptoms throughout their lives, they have probably struggled with autism without receiving the appropriate diagnosis and treatment. In this case, an autism self-diagnosis could be a helpful first step in obtaining support and desired treatment.

However, if symptoms have developed in recent years, an autism diagnosis may be appropriate, or the adult could be experiencing an emotional imbalance. Some of the symptoms of an emotional imbalance look a lot like autism:

·        Social anxiety

·        Panic attacks

·        Obsessive-compulsive behaviors

However, other symptoms indicate an imbalance rather than autism. These include severe depression, unexplained sadness, and lethargy.

Treatment Methods for Emotional Imbalance

There are some things adults can do to determine whether they are experiencing an imbalance or adult-onset autism. For example, if adults gradually pick up the activities they once enjoyed, create more flexibility in their lives, and learn to tune out unwanted stimuli, they probably don’t have autism. Treatment for emotional imbalances is widely varied and is often determined by the adult and their chosen mental health professional.

Ways To Get an Accurate Autism Diagnosis and Treatment

Although there are online tests that may help adults self-diagnose their symptoms, the best way for adults to determine whether they have autism or an emotional imbalance is to contact a trained professional. Adults with the diagnosis are generally treated with behavioral therapy and specific tools that differ from those given to children.

Takeaway Points

When adults suspect they have autism, they may look for ways to self-diagnose before seeking help from mental health professionals. When clinicians become involved, they’ll generally use in-person communications and observations to make a diagnosis. Mental health professionals also consider symptoms reported by the adult. At this point, effective treatment is available.

5 Benefits of Moving a Family Member to Assisted Living

Moving a senior family member to an assisted living facility can feel overwhelming and intimidating for everyone, especially if they seem a little unsure about the idea. Change can be scary. Assisted living may make them feel incapable and old, which can lead to a bad reaction. However, just because a chapter ends, this doesn’t mean that a new and more suitable one can’t start. To help your senior family member make the right decision for them, you need to do some research together and let them know the pros. So, here are five benefits of moving a family member to assisted living.

Royalty Free Photo

Reduces Loneliness and Isolation

Nothing is worse than feeling alone, especially as you start to go older. Even if you are a supportive family, many senior family members can feel isolated, especially if you lead busy lives and they have lost people close to them. Assisted living can prevent social isolation as it provides a community environment full of people to socialize with. Staff will encourage partaking in social events, which has its benefits.

Can Help with Finances

Elderly people can find it difficult to keep up with all of their bills and online payments as they grow older. They are also more susceptible to scams. Debt can pile up easily and quickly. This could get your senior family member in financial trouble and cause unnecessary stress. If they make the decision to move into assisted living, they will be able to manage their finances easier and keep their savings safe.

Offers Peace of Mind

Moving your senior family member to assisted living will give you both peace of mind. You will know that they are in safe hands with 24/7 healthcare available to them and plenty of people to make friends with. They will also be able to rest comfortably knowing this. To reassure you and your senior family member, there are considerations to make and questions to ask the staff and residents.

More Focus on Fun and Independence

Many seniors are put off moving into assisted living because they don’t want to lose their independence. However, residents in these communities are usually more independent and have more fun. This is because the customized care services and assistance ensure residents can do what they want to do, when they want to do it. There are also many fun activities and social events for them to take part in.

Safer and Better-Quality Living

Everything about assisted living is safer. The facility will be secured and there will be people on-site at all times. Transportation is readily available and safe, which is perfect for seniors who struggle to drive or can’t afford to own a car. There are great facilities on-site, like a gym and fun classes, which can improve quality of life. Residents can also get delicious and nutritious meals cooked for them.

Communication is key when it comes to making a big decision like this one. At the end of the day, it is your loved one’s choice whether or not to make that decision, you just need to support them and provide them with all of the information that they need to reassure them.
