Energy Saving Tips For Winter

When the cold weather starts to creep in and the boiler gets switched on, it is important that you have an eye on the energy bills for the coming months and what you should be doing in order to keep them down. You will want your home warm during the winter months of course but that is no reason to pay more than you have to for your energy usage. Through a smart approach you can make sure that your home heating is efficient and that your bills don’t spiral out of control during the winter months. To help us with some tips we spoke to the guys at South Bay Energy, who offered this advice.

Service

The first thing to do in anticipation of the winter months is to ensure that your home heating system is firing on all cylinders. Whilst it is recommended that you get this serviced every other year, spending the money on an annual checkup makes much more sense and will ensure that your boiler, your radiators and the system on the whole is in good shape.

Windows and Doors

There is little point in having a fully functioning heating system if you are only going to allow that heat to walk right out the doors and the windows. This happens when either windows or doors are not properly sealed and it is important that you get this checked and remedied as soon as possible. Sealing can easily break and split over the course of the year owing to varying temperatures, so be sure that you have resealed all of these areas of the home.

Thermostat

Make sure that your heating is coming on at the right times during the day, and not being used when it just isn’t needed. For example if you are getting up each morning at 7 then you only need the heating to come at 6, not any earlier. Equally if everyone is out of the house by 9 then you don’t need the heating to stay on until 10 or later, make sure it is switched off by 830. The same goes for the afternoon when everyone will be getting home. Don’t have the heating on when you don’t need it.

Isolating

If you have empty rooms in the home then make sure that the doors remain shut on those rooms throughout the winter months, and that you have turned off the radiator in that room. Again there is little point in using heat where it isn’t needed and this will save you a lot of money on your heating bills.

Dressing Up

As nice as it is to have a nice warm house, it isn’t always necessary to put the heating on. For example if you are at home alone, using just one room, then there are better options to keep you warm than firing up the heating system. Wearing extra layers, using a portable heater or putting the fire on will serve you much better than switching on the heating.

Follow these tips and save money on your heating bills this winter.

10 Tips to Travel Safe with Pets

Quick… Name a family member that brings you tremendous joy and peace… Did your four-legged friend come to mind? Without question, our pets are an extension of our family. So, when we travel, we definitely want to ensure their comfort and safety.

Flying can be a stressful time for even the calmest pup or kitten. There’s a slew of new sights and sounds and they have no idea what’s going on around them. Whether you’re traveling by car or plane, we have some tips that’ll help you travel safe and maybe even ensure a little bit of comfort.

1. Do a Trial Run

If you’re traveling by car, do a trial run. See how your dog or cat does on an hourlong ride to one of your favorite destinations.

Be sure to pause for a break after the hour to allow your dog to stretch his or her legs and see that being in a car isn’t a death sentence. Rather, it can be a nice, relaxing time, spent in comfortable quarters.

2. Check Your Airlines

If you’re about to travel by plane, then there’s a lot of research to conduct. Each airline has its own set of fees and regulations regarding pet travel. (Some don’t allow pets at all.) There are also various weight limits that indicate whether or not you can carry on your pet or check them in with your baggage.

Checking our pets in with our baggage kind of hurts our hearts. But, sometimes it’s necessary. Did you know airlines are required to turn in annual incident reports regarding pets who were lost or killed in the cargo area? So, if you find a flight you like, search for that airline’s incident report before committing to the flight.

3. Fly Direct

You really don’t want to have to make a transfer with your pet. This leaves them open to a slew of risks. They could be left out on the tarmac in cold weather; roughly handled by employees; lost between transfers or worse.

Let’s stop there and say you almost never want to have to make a connection with your dog or cat stowed below. If you can’t find a direct flight, see if you can spend a night in the layover city. This gives you time to reunite with your puppy or kitten and then travel on to the final destination.

4. Cozy Up Their Crate

You’ll know if you need a pet crate for a road trip. Perhaps some pillows and a blanket will suffice. But, if you’re flying, then there’s no way around a pet carrier and there are a few pointers to keep in mind when selecting a crate.

First, if this is the first time your four-legged friend is going to spend time in a pet carrier, then, start getting them used to it weeks in advance. Conduct some basic training (using a reward system) so they’ll be able to hop right into their cozy space in lieu of you forcing them into it.

Then, the crate itself will take a little bit of decision-making. It needs to provide enough room for your baby to stand up and make a full circle. Once you’ve determined the right size, you also want to see that the crate is USDA approved, something along the lines of the Petmate Sky Kennel.

5. Carry Food and Water

This seems like an obvious one, but we mention it because there are a few ways to ensure your beloved pal gets fed and watered during a flight. As for food, we recommend fastening a small pouch of dry food to the exterior of the crate. This will allow airline employees to feed your pet, should they chose, if you’re forced into a situation with a layover.

You can do the same thing with water. Secure a half-full container of water to the exterior of the rate. You don’t want to fill the bottle because it’ll expand in the high altitude and possibly explode. Hopefully, an airline attendant will see to your pet’s basic water needs, given all the panting and exasperation they may be experiencing.

If you’re traveling by car, some of the same principles apply. Carry a few treats for them to enjoy throughout the drive. We love collapsible food and water bowls. You can stop at the side of the road for a leg stretch, pop open a set of bowls, and feed and water your pal during this bit of downtime.

6. Visit Your Veterinarian

It doesn’t hurt to have a quick little checkup before departure. Make sure your pet’s vaccinations are up to date and ask for a certificate from your vet, indicating a very recent date.

Also, if you think you’ll have a nervous flyer, your vet can recommend the best course of action to get them ramped up for a successful trip.

In truth, we’re not huge fans of tranquilizing your pet before a flight. It can interfere with their breathing at high altitudes. Still, speak to your trusted provider for their recommendations.

7. Consider a First Aid Kit

Amidst your travel bowls, blankets, treats, and other trinkets, it can be reassuring to have a small first aid kit on hand, too. This can be as basic as gauze, bandages, and a small bottle of hydrogen peroxide.

8. Locate the Nearest Vet

No matter where you travel, you always want to know where the nearest vet’s office is. Conduct an online search before you leave, pinpointing the finest provider in the area.

The American Veterinary Medical Association has some helpful tips on how to do just that. Some of their considerations include a close look at the services offered, how they collect fees and payments, and whether or not they have emergency care.

9. Err On the Side of Caution

This mostly pertains to car travel, as airline travel is highly regulated. When you’re stopping for bathroom breaks, always secure your pet. Even if your dog is your faithful sidekick who never leaves your side when you’re at home, keep him or her tied to a leash in these new surroundings.

The sounds of cars, trucks, and motorcycles can be overwhelming at truck stops and other rest areas. This can make their behavior unpredictable and you never want them to bolt in a moment of panic.

10. Consider a Pets-Only Airline

Some animal lover out there took note of the major catastrophes pet-owners can face when flying and debuted America’s first pet-only airline. Pet Airways is the first airline that allows pets to lounge comfortably in the terminal and enjoy a comfortable flight above board, no matter their size.

Upon departure, they’ll be secured into the cabin where an attendant will check on them every 15 minutes and provide regular bathroom breaks. Although you can’t travel with your lovable pup, you can keep an eye on them via an online platform. Pretty fantastic, right?

You Can Travel Safe

Without a doubt, you can travel safe with your fur baby. You can also ensure a certain level of comfort, no matter how jittery they may be about the prospect of flying.

And that’s what we’re all about, here at Puppy Smarts. We love updating our blog with new ways to care for your dog, train them, treat them with new toys, and more. Whether you’re in full-blown flight preparation or just considering a future flight, we hope these tips and tricks will put your mind at ease!

A Lavish Wedding isn’t a Prerequisite for a Happy Marriage

woman holding bouquet of roses

There’s nothing wrong in planning a grand wedding if it will make you happy and you can afford one. However, you can’t assume that having a lavish wedding will lead to a wonderful marriage. Even if the wedding turns out to be exactly as you hoped, it won’t necessarily make your relationship strong.

If you decide to spend everything on the wedding and you start your marriage broke, you might end up getting loans and spending the next several years of your married life paying for it. It will eventually take a toll on your relationship until you don’t feel satisfied anymore.

Therefore, you have to simplify the wedding and let go of unnecessary details.

An excessive wedding dress isn’t necessary

You have dreamed of walking down the aisle in a beautiful white dress your entire life. You now have a chance to do it during your wedding. Therefore, you decide to find an expensive wedding designer to create your gown. If you can afford to pay for it, you can pursue the plan. However, if you can’t, you should look for alternatives. Besides, you will only wear the dress once. You don’t want to spend that much on something you won’t wear again.

You don’t have to invite everyone

Don’t feel obliged to invite everyone to attend your wedding. Start with the people closest to your heart. If you want a small and intimate wedding to reduce the expense, there’s nothing wrong with it. You can express your gratitude to those whom you didn’t invite and make them feel special. If money is an issue, the others will understand why you didn’t think about inviting a large crowd.

Choose a simpler venue

You find a venue based on the number of guests you expect to come. If you only invite a few people, you can choose a smaller wedding venue. It won’t cost you as much as a large ballroom or an outdoor space. Don’t worry about how beautiful these venues will look in photos. With a great team to decorate the place, everything will look magical.

Choose affordable food

It’s great if you take the time to have food and wine tasting before your wedding. You can decide which of the options your guests would love. However, you also need to look at the cost of the dishes. If there’s an option that tastes good but isn’t as expensive as the rest, it’s good enough.

Don’t settle for a cheap wedding photographer

Even if you have to cut back on some other expenses, you can’t do the same when choosing a photographer. Even a simple wedding will look lavish in photos when you have an excellent photographer. Therefore, you need to look for the best person to do the job. You can check out quality Omaha photographers if you plan to have your wedding in the area.

With these tips, you can have a happy married life because you saved a lot during the wedding. Of course, you have to keep working on your marriage if you want it to last.

Follow this Advice from the Top Professional Resume Writers

When picking over potential candidates for a job, there are times when the most qualified ones are tossed aside without a second look. The main reason for this to happen is a resume that is sub-par. It doesn’t matter if you have 5, 10, or 20 years of industry experience, a resume that looks sloppy or doesn’t meet the same standards of the other candidates will greatly decrease your chances of a job offer.

We can’t even begin to tell you the importance of a high-quality resume that stands out from the rest. According to some of the most qualified resume writers in the professional resume writing industry, here is a bit of advice that will help your resume reach its fullest potential.

Utilize keywords from the job posting

This is one of the oldest tricks in the resume writing book, but now it is becoming more of a necessity to utilize job posting keywords and phrases. It’s a lot easier than it sounds. All you have to do is take a look at the job posting of the position you’re applying for. Check out the list of necessary skills, qualifications, and certifications on the posting page. Then, jot down a few of the recurring words or phrases that stand out to you.

These words might include “strong communication skills”, “solid work ethic”, or “leadership experience”. There also might be specific ones relating to the job description, like “must be knowledgeable in WordPress”. Use these general and specific keywords throughout your resume. This will make it stand out and also show that you are highly qualified for the job.

Check out sample resumes from the industry

You can get a solid understanding of what the industry leaders are looking for by reviewing a few sample resumes. Check out ones that are specific to the job title to see what should (and should not) be included. Obviously don’t copy this information, but you can get a good idea of proper formatting and necessary work experience.

Use professional formatting, but add your own personal flair

Your resume should look professional, but this doesn’t mean it has to be boring. Yours needs to stand out from the other 100 resumes in the pile. The best way to do this is to use a resume writing template and find the one that appeals to you most. These templates help resume writers to put words on the page in an appealing way, rather than just listing everything off.

Include only what’s relevant and essential

There’s no need to write about your ability to juggle on your resume – unless of course you’re applying to the circus or clown school. Only include what is absolutely essential. Try not to include anything from years and years in the past, but keep it relevant with your more recent experiences.

Be active, not passive

Speaking and writing in an active tone shows that you have authority. When you write in a passive voice, you fail to use power words like accomplished, achieved, and completed. With an active voice, you’ll come off as confident and it eliminates “fluff” from your writing.

How to Make Your Gifts Look More Personal

Although we really shouldn’t, judging a book by it’s cover it’s still something we all do – and gifts are no exception. How many times have you seen an exquisite wrapping job, only to receive another pair of socks. Or maybe you have a loved one that’s a practical jokester and wraps their expensive gifts in a heinous way. Either way, gifts that look personal before unwrapping can make gifts, and the relationship between the giver and receiver, seem that much more special, memorable, and heartfelt. And of course, a personalized gift would make the occasion even more meaningful.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/9DoNsaskZyEzEixlYJGN50f_WPCj4TpnXOBUMtNV8fjWq6hvJy0H4CCasPLoQVZhwqwZzfRuVhNrzVq4klzVhCBSeyeNj6VU8D5akDhzQABKTIErQ_fbNxWN71rIbjDo7OQsqJ9N

Sticker Tags

One of the most important parts of your gift is often the last thing you put on it – the gift tag! Obviously the person you’re giving it to needs to know who it’s from. For a fun and unique gift tag, try making one out of a custom sticker. A custom sticker of your recipients name, customized Visa gift cards, monogrammed initials, or even date of the special event can not only elevate the gifts personalization, but makes for a super fun and unique added bonus as well. A custom sticker can be used to decorate notebooks, water bottles, laptops, cell phone cases, or anything your loved one can think of. Best part is, everytime they look at their sticker they’ll be reminded of you and your awesome gift giving skills.

Stamped Paper

Tired of wrapping your gifts in generic wrapping paper? This hands on DIY is a great way to get the whole family involved and all you need is some kraft paper, paint, and a set of hands! Paint you and your family’s hands complimentary or seasonal colours and stamp away on some plain kraft paper for a totally one-of-a-kind and personal wrapping paper! This idea is great for gifts that are from the entire family because literally every family member had a hand in creating it.

Cloth & Patches

A great way to gift presents for the eco-friendly friend in your life (or maybe you are the eco-friendly friend) is to use reusable and waste-free cloths as wrapping. Patterned cloth makes for unique stand-out wrapping that the recipient can then use as they desire. To take your cloth wrapping up a notch, attach a custom printed patch as a tag that your loved one can use as a cool personalized accessory. You can find it in Stickeryou.com. Make a patch of your friend or family members favourite character, saying, initial, or photograph and even merrow the border in a complimentary or favourite colour. This way your friend not only gets a sustainable gift, but also a thoughtful added bonus.

Map Wrapping

Maybe you have a friend who’s moved far away, or you and your special someone met somewhere you don’t reside in currently. A super personal way to wrap gifts is to do so with a map! Maps are still relatively inexpensive and can be found at most tourist centres or even online. Wrap a gift for someone from a map of where you met, or wrap separate gifts in maps from the place you live and a map of the location your friend or family member has moved to. This lets loved ones know that no matter where you are in the world, your relationship knows no bounds.

Get Magnetic

This gift wrapping idea is a little out of the box – literally. For a totally one-of-a-kind wrapping idea, forgo the gift boxes and paper and opt for a tin! Perfect for smaller gifts, tins that mints come in can be found at convenience stores, and plain reusable ones are readily available at a lot of dollar and craft stores as well (of course mint tins can also be decoupaged with patterned paper if you don’t want them to think you’re pulling a fast one on them). To up the ante, include a gift card that’s actually a custom magnetic name badge. You can make the name badge something related to the gift or something that symbolizes your relationship. Magnetic badges are a cool accessory because they can be easily removed and repositioned from any article of clothing, accessory, or kitchen appliance. Magnetic backed badges make for an incredible personal gift that lets others knows just how attached you are to them.

If you love the look of solid wood flooring or stone flooring but can’t justify the high cost of wood flooring options and stone flooring options, it’s well worth considering moduleo flooring. As there are a wide array of wood look options and stone look options which look and feel like the real thing but are a whole lot cheaper than real wood or stone flooring options.

So if you’d like to purchase flooring which looks more expensive than laminate and which gives the same look as solid hardwood floors or stone floors, it’s well worth seriously considering opting for moduleo flooring.

However, as most types of moduleo flooring have been designed to be waterproof, you’ll be able to use moduleo flooring in areas of your home which are prone to getting wet. How GPS Trackers Can Benefit Hikers

When you speak to most people who enjoy hiking and ask them what it is that they like so much about it, they will probably reply that it is the feeling of being list, and off the grid which they relish. Whilst this is of course one of the many great benefits of hiking, being completely unreachable is not a good idea and it can cost lives. This is why taking a GPS tracker with you on the trail makes so much sense and whilst it will still mean that you are connected somewhat, you will still have your freedom. There are many benefits of GPS trackers, and these are just a few which you can depend on when you hike with one in your bag.

Emergency

Many hikers like to up the ante when they hit a trail and they will take routes which may be dangerous or routes which perhaps have not been taken before. Of course in such a situation there is a far higher risk of something happening. Let’s say that you have a fall and hurt yourself, you shout for help and nobody answers, and then you remember that you have your cellphone, a device many use for the GPS tracking. Unfortunately in this situation there is unlikely to be any phone reception, so what do you do? A GPs tracker has an SOS feature which can send an alert to one of your contacts, letting them know that there is an emergency situation and letting them know of your location. This technology benefits people of all ages in any situation like hiking.

Showing Up

Whilst there is a real freedom to hiking it is always a smart idea to plot your movements some days ahead, knowing at which coordinates you will stop for the night. A great idea which the GPS tracker can help you with is to let someone know what your itinerary is, so that they can ensure that you turn up to where you are supposed. You may have thought about the prior example and considered being knocked out, how would you be able to send the SOS code then? Should someone have your itinerary however they will be able to see that you haven’t arrived to where you were supposed to, and then alert the emergency services.

Kids

If you have teenagers who like to go hiking then you can use a GPS tracker simply to make sure that they are alright. My kids go for many day trips with their backpacks and these days I let them go alone, as long as they have their tracker. I never monitor the kids too much but as a parent it gives me great comfort to know that I can see them whenever I need to. Equally should something go wrong, I can find them in super quick time, time which may be very precious.

If you like to hike, why not get a new GPS tracker to throw into your bag?

What Free Background Checks Will Find

A key part of any recruitment strategy is performing background checks on the potential candidates. With so many free background checks online there is really no reason why someone shouldn’t thoroughly check out a potential candidate before they start to hire. There are so many reasons why a background check is important and avoiding doing this could have dangerous ramifications for your business. These checks are designed to show a person’s history and you can use it to verify that what they have told you is correct, and to understand more about a candidate. Here is what a background check will find out.

Credit History

If you are looking for someone to work for you in a financial capacity where they will have to look after accounts or handle cash, you want to make sure that they are financially responsible. A credit check can certainly give you an indication of this and whilst it won’t exactly tell you the incomings and outgoings of a person, it will give you an idea as to how they manage their finances.

Driver’s Check

If you are going to be putting someone on the road under the name of your company then you need to make sure that their driving history is up to scratch. With a driving check you will be able to see if this person has any penalties or points on their license, any accidents which they have had, any traffic violations and even any driving-related convictions. This check is going to be very important for any company who advertises a position which involves driving vehicles.

Criminal Check

Probably some of the most important information which a background check will find out is the criminal history of the person that you are considering to hire. Now hiring ex-convicts is completely up to you and in fact should be encouraged, as long as the cards are laid on the table from the outset. If the criminal check brings back information about someone that they have not declared then their integrity can be fairly called into question. Equally if you have someone seeking employment who has committed a heinous crime which you cannot look past, they may very well avoid declaring this. A criminal check is so important as if you hire someone that has a history and you didn’t check it out, something could take place within the workplace and your company reputation could be greatly damaged.

Education

Many people like to embellish their education or the qualifications that they have in the belief that they have more of a chance of a position, but these people can be quickly found out using background checks. These educational checks are about verifying someone’s educational history, and to give you an indication as to how honest that person is.

These checks are critical to ensuring that you have the best person for the job, so make sure that it is an important part of your recruitment strategy.

Three of the Hardest Stains to Remove

If you’re interested in learning a few DIY stain hacks, that will make removing difficult stains a little easier, simply continue reading to discover three of the hardest stains to remove as well as 3 tips to remove them.

Three of the Hardest Stains to Remove and How to Remove Them:

1. Ketchup

Chances are that you’ve spilled ketchup onto one of your favorite items of clothing in the past. If you’ve always struggled to remove ketchup stains from your clothing, you’re in luck as there is a relatively simple way to rid your clothing of unsightly ketchup stains.

Firstly, you’ll dramatically increase your chances of completely removing your ketchup stain if you remember to place your clothing item under running water for a few minutes, as soon as you notice your stain. After a few minutes place your clothing item in a sink or plastic bucket filled with hot water and use a sponge that has been squirted with dishwashing liquid to wash your ketchup stain out of your clothing.

2. Red wine

Next time you accidentally knock over a glass of red wine and manage to stain a white shirt or your carpet, don’t worry simply use the following tips to remove any trace of spillage.

Firstly cover your stain with a handful of salt. Although if you have managed to spill red wine over a large area of fabric or carpet you may need to use more salt. After a couple of minutes, you should notice that the salt which you covered your stain with has started to absorb your red wine and that your salt should start to turn pink in color.

Next, fill your laundry basin with cold water and place your clothing item in your basin overnight to soak with a special enzyme detergent, which will remove all traces of red wine from your clothing. However, if you’ve managed to stain your carpet you’ll need to periodically sponge the affected area with water and your enzyme detergent every couple of hours.

3. Pen marks

If you’ve ever got pen marks on your clothing and thrown out your clothing, as a result, stop what you’re doing and write down this handy trick. So that you’ll be able to effectively remove pen marks from your clothing in the future.

To remove pen marks from clothing simply place a regular paper towel underneath your clothing item and start spraying your affected item with hairspray. Until the fabric is thoroughly soaked. Then let the hairspray soak into your material for a couple of minutes before using a second dry napkin to lightly pat your fabric dry. Repeat this process a couple of times before washing your item in your washing machine with an enzyme specific detergent.

So if you’ve thrown away dozens of clothing items over the years as they’ve been stained by pen marks, ketchup or wine, you’re in luck as the next time you notice a clothing stain, you’ll have the tools and tips to help you rid your clothing of unsightly stains!

How To Make a Skirt Out of Ties

Whether your dad has plenty of old ties which he no longer uses or you think you can easily find two dozen silk ties at your local thrift store, it’s well worth experimenting with using old ties to create a brand new, fashion-forward skirt.

If you’re interested in making a beautiful skirt using old ties but have little sewing experience, continue reading to discover how to make a skirt out of ties with minimal fuss!

How to make a skirt out of ties, the simple way:

1. Acquire as many old silk ties as possible

It’s well worth asking your dad, grandpa and male friends whether they have any spare silk ties which they never wear and which they are comfortable donating for your DIY fashion project. Although you can also find inexpensively used silk ties at your local thrift store or on an online auction site such as eBay!

2. Iron each of your silk ties using a delicate silk-friendly setting

Make sure to iron each of your silk ties, so that they don’t have any nasty wrinkles or creases before you start your DIY fashion project. Just be sure to set your iron to a silk-friendly setting before you start ironing as you don’t want to burn or ruin your silk fabric.

3. Start cutting each of your silk ties in half

In order to ensure that your cut each silk tie accurately, simply fold each tie in half before cutting it in half.

4. Trim your tie pieces so that they are all the same length

As the last thing you want to do is to end up wearing a skirt which has a jagged or uneven hemline it’s definitely well worth trimming each of your silk tie pieces so that they are all roughly the same length. This step is crucial as it will ensure that your end product looks professionally sewen instead of like a child’s home economics project.

5. Next, line your tie pieces up and pin them so that they are tacked together and slightly overlap

Next, you’ll need to line up and pine up your silk tie pieces to that they are tacked together. Make sure that each tie overlaps the next tie by at least 2 inches.

6. Use your sewing machine to sew each tie piece to the next

As you’ve already used pins to tack up your skirt, start to sew each tie piece to the next until each of your ties has been sewn to the next tie. At this point, your tie skirt should look like a semi-finished skirt.

7. Create an elastic waistband

You’ll need to measure your waist in order to sew an elastic waistband which will be the right size for your waist.

8. Sew your elastic waistband to the top of your tie skirt

The final step in sewing your tie skirt is to sew your elastic waistband to the top of your DIY tie skirt!

So if you love the idea of sewing your own tie skirt, it’s well worth following the steps listed above in order to ensure that your tie skirt looks professionally sewn!
