Winning the Laundry Game With a Big Family: Real Tips for Staying Sane

FacebookTweetPinPrintLinkedIn

If you’ve got a large family, you know the laundry pile doesn’t just grow—it multiplies. Socks disappear, towels reappear mysteriously damp, and that mountain of “I’ll fold it later” keeps staring you down from across the room.

For many, laundry can turn into a full-time job no one actually signed up for. So how do you wrestle those heaps into something manageable? Let’s get into the details, laughs, and honest advice, because with the right plan, you can totally win at laundry—even with six people and a dog.

Give Every Family Member a Role

First off, you don’t need to be a lone hero. Even the youngest kids can help sort socks or pair up mittens. Make laundry a regular family event—think of it like a mini assembly line, not a solo chore. Assign jobs based on age: toddlers toss clothes in the basket, teens can handle the machines and the folding (with some guidance, sure, but it’s worth it). Giving children ownership of chores boosts confidence and lightens your own load.

Set a Schedule (And Actually Stick With It)

When you’re dealing with more than a couple of people, laundry schedules stop being optional. Choosing specific laundry days—and sticking to them—keeps baskets from overflowing. For big families, try tackling a load or two daily instead of cramming it all into the weekend. Color-code baskets for each family member, so clean clothes never get mixed up again. Sounds small, but color-coding is a life-saver.

You can even designate special bins for towels and sheets and set aside one “catch-up” day for when life happens and things pile up.

Go Simple With Supplies and Tools

You don’t need six kinds of detergent. Stick with one that works for everyone (including anyone with sensitive skin). Sturdy, easy-to-carry baskets and a folding table in your laundry area can save your back and streamline the shuffle between machine and closet.

And if your trusty machines act up, handle any washer repair fast—waiting just one week without it and you’ll realize how much you rely on that appliance. Quick tip: checking the lint trap in your dryer every single time actually does keep things running smoother.

Sort Smarter, Not Harder

Sorting as you go is key. Place divided hampers or inexpensive laundry sorters in bedrooms or bathrooms—one side for lights, one for darks, another for towels, and so on. When it’s time for a load, you just grab the section and go. This tiny habit saves massive time and endless sock-matching headaches.

Make Folding Social—Or At Least Less Boring

Nobody loves folding. Make it bearable by turning on a movie, cranking some music, or looping in the kids. Everybody folds their own stack, then puts it away. For bigger families, even ten minutes together eases the feeling that you’re always behind.

Celebrate Wins (And Clean Socks)

When all else fails, remember: every finished load is a victory. Perfection isn’t the goal—clean clothes and a little less chaos are the real wins. Give yourself grace, enjoy those fresh-smelling sheets, and accept the occasional odd sock as a badge of honor. You’re doing great.
