Can CBD Ease Endometriosis Pain?

FacebookTweetPinPrintLinkedIn

CBD, or cannabidiol, has gained increasing popularity in recent years, with people taking advantage of it as a natural option for relieving pain, anxiety, depression, and other conditions. The research behind these benefits is limited at present, but experts and CBD devotees alike are optimistic about the possibilities.

CBD Benefits

CBD, or cannabidiol, is an extract of the marijuana plant that, unlike the THC variants of the same plant, will not get you high. However, it shares many of the same benefits that has garnered so much attention for medical marijuana

Attendees of the 2019 American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists (AAGL) Global Congress reported on a study presented by Anna Reinert, MD, that aimed to “identify the prevalence of medical cannabis use among endometriosis patients as well as the effectiveness of both cannabis and cannabidiol in their pain management.” According to the findings reported on this conference, the clinical participants and those recruited from the Endometriosis Association were most likely to report CBD as “moderately effective” in managing their pain.

Dr. Reinert agreed, though, that further research is needed to explore these benefits behind CBD when it comes to managing endometriosis pain, which is true pretty universally of CBD. As of now, there’s very little clinical research behind CBD products.

The Federal Drug Administration has formally approved one CBD product, a medication called Epidiolex used to treat seizures caused by Lennox-Gastaut and Dravet syndromes. Beyond that, the CBD industry is largely unregulated which, joined with the historical debates over marijuana and marijuana-based products, has made research studies difficult.

But these clinical limitations don’t mean there’s no evidence backing up the ever-popular claims of CBD benefits. Like in Dr. Reinert’s study, endometriosis patients and others suffering from chronic pain report positive effects at large. The World Health Organization (WHO) quotes Pisanti, S., et al with a list of diseases that may see from therapeutic benefits from CBD, including:

  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Pain
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Cancer
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Cardiovascular diseases
  • and more

So, while many of these benefits are not yet clinically proven, both patient testimonials and results of existing research indicate benefits, including relief from pain caused by endometriosis and other conditions.

Types of CBD Products

The best way to determine whether CBD will prove to have these benefits for you—after all, everyone reacts to treatments differently—is to try it for yourself. But what sort of product is best? That depends.

What different CBD products are available?

You can try CBD is a wide variety of formats. A few of the most popular include:

  • Oils
  • Tinctures, lotions, and ointments
  • Vaping liquids
  • Joints and cigarettes
  • Flower
  • Candies
  • Teas

If you’re trying to decide on which product is best for you, there are a few factors to consider.

What’s the difference?

Personal preference is, of course, a factor in what product you choose. But some other details include the dosages available in a product and how long it takes for the CBD to take effect. Head to your favorite smoke shop’s website or retail locations to browse their selection or look up reviews and recommendations from users to figure out what’s right for you. Some people might prefer to browse the CBD joints for sale while others might opt for a tincture or CBD flower. The online retail shop Plain Jane offers organic, discrete, and most importantly fun products that can help promote wellness and joy. Whichever you choose, remember—you can always try a different product if you decide another might be a better fit!

If you’re considering trying CBD to ease endometriosis pain, be sure to research the company and type of product that’s right for you. Research and clinical studies will continue and, in the meantime, patients’ glowing reviews speak for themselves: CBD is one of the most promising alternative remedies for treating pain from endometriosis and other conditions.
